Adiparvan · v1
सूत उवाच मातुः सकाशात्तं शापं श्रुत्वा पन्नगसत्तमः वासुकिश्चिन्तयामास शापोऽयं न भवेत्कथम्
Sauti said: Vāsuki, best among snakes, heard about the curse from his mother and wondered about how it might be aborted.
सौती ने कहा: साँपों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ वासुकि ने अपनी माँ से श्राप के बारे में सुना और सोचा कि इसका गर्भपात कैसे किया जा सकता है।
He held a consultation with Airāvata and all his other brothers, those who were devoted to dharma.
उन्होंने ऐरावत और उसके अन्य सभी भाइयों, जो धर्म के प्रति समर्पित थे, के साथ परामर्श किया।
Vāsuki said: "O unblemished ones! As you know, a curse has been pronounced on all of us. We should have consultations to free ourselves from this curse.
वासुकी ने कहा: "हे निष्कलंक! जैसा कि आप जानते हैं, हम सभी पर एक शाप का उच्चारण किया गया है। हमें इस शाप से मुक्त होने के लिए परामर्श करना चाहिए।"

सर्वेषामेव शापानां प्रतिघातो हि विद्यते न तु मात्राभिशप्तानां मोक्षो विद्येत पन्नगाः
There is no curse that does not have a remedy. O snakes! But he who has been cursed by his mother has no remedy.
ऐसा कोई अभिशाप नहीं जिसका कोई इलाज न हो। हे साँपों! परन्तु जिसे अपनी माता ने श्राप दिया हो उसके पास कोई उपाय नहीं है।

अव्ययस्याप्रमेयस्य सत्यस्य च तथाग्रतः शप्ता इत्येव मे श्रुत्वा जायते हृदि वेपथुः
My heart trembles on hearing that this curse was uttered before the immutable, immeasurable and truthful one.
यह सुनकर मेरा हृदय काँप जाता है कि यह शाप उस अखण्ड, अपरिमेय और सत्य के सामने कहा गया है।
Without a doubt, our annihilation is imminent. Otherwise, the immutable lord would have prevented our mother from imposing the curse.
निःसंदेह, हमारा विनाश निकट है। अन्यथा, अपरिवर्तनीय स्वामी ने हमारी माँ को श्राप देने से रोक दिया होता।
Therefore, let us consult now to see how the health of the snakes can be preserved. Let us not waste time.
इसलिए, आइए अब परामर्श करें कि सांपों के स्वास्थ्य को कैसे संरक्षित किया जा सकता है। आइए हम समय बर्बाद न करें.

अपि मन्त्रयमाणा हि हेतुं पश्याम मोक्षणे यथा नष्टं पुरा देवा गूढमग्निं गुहागतम्
Through our consultations, we may be able to find a means of escape, like in ancient times the gods regained the lost Agni who had hidden himself inside a cave,

so that Janamejaya's sacrifice for the destruction of the snakes does not take place or is overcome."
ताकि सांपों के विनाश के लिए जनमेजय का बलिदान न हो या खत्म हो जाए।”
Sauti said: Thus addressed, all of Kadrū's offspring assembled. They were wise in counsels and put forward their views.
सौती ने कहा: इस प्रकार संबोधित करते हुए, कद्रू की सभी संतानें इकट्ठी हो गईं। वे सलाह देने में बुद्धिमान थे और अपने विचार सामने रखते थे।
Some snakes present said, "Let us assume the form of bulls among Brāhmana-s and beg Janamejaya to call off the sacrifice."
उपस्थित कुछ साँपों ने कहा, "आइए हम ब्राह्मणों के बीच बैल का रूप धारण करें और जनमेजय से बलिदान बंद करने की प्रार्थना करें।"
Other snakes who believed themselves to be wise said, "All of us will become his best advisers.
अन्य साँप जो स्वयं को बुद्धिमान मानते थे, उन्होंने कहा, "हम सभी उनके सबसे अच्छे सलाहकार बनेंगे।
Without a doubt, he will then ask for our considered opinion on all the rituals and we will render him advice that the sacrifice should be stopped.
निस्संदेह, वह सभी अनुष्ठानों पर हमारी सुविचारित राय मांगेगा और हम उसे सलाह देंगे कि बलि बंद कर दी जानी चाहिए।
Thinking us to be extremely wise, the wise king will certainly ask us about the sacrifice and we will give reasons why it should not be held.
बुद्धिमान राजा हमें अत्यंत बुद्धिमान समझकर हमसे यज्ञ के विषय में अवश्य पूछेगा और हम कारण बतायेंगे कि यज्ञ क्यों नहीं करना चाहिए।
We will point out many serious evils, in this world and the next, that will result and show causes and reasons why the sacrifice should not be held.
हम इस लोक और परलोक में होने वाली अनेक गंभीर बुराइयों की ओर संकेत करेंगे और कारण तथा कारण बताएँगे कि क्यों यज्ञ नहीं करना चाहिए।
Or if a preceptor, who is known to be devoted to the king's welfare and is well-versed in the rites of a snake-sacrifice, is appointed as the priest,
या यदि कोई गुरु, जो राजा के कल्याण के प्रति समर्पित माना जाता है और सर्प-यज्ञ के अनुष्ठान में पारंगत है, को पुजारी के रूप में नियुक्त किया जाता है,

तं गत्वा दशतां कश्चिद्भुजगः स मरिष्यति तस्मिन्हते यज्ञकरे क्रतुः स न भविष्यति
one of us can bite and kill him so that he is dispatched to the land of Yāma. If the sacrificial priest is killed, there will be no sacrifice.
हममें से कोई भी उसे काट सकता है और मार सकता है ताकि उसे यमलोक भेज दिया जाए। यदि यज्ञकर्ता की हत्या कर दी जाये तो यज्ञ नहीं होगा।
If other experts in snake-sacrifices are appointed as officiating priests, we will bite them too and our objective will be attained."
यदि सर्प-बलि के अन्य विशेषज्ञों को कार्यवाहक पुजारी के रूप में नियुक्त किया जाता है, तो हम उन्हें भी डस लेंगे और हमारा उद्देश्य प्राप्त हो जाएगा।"
Some other snakes who were devoted to dharma said, "This advice is not good. It is not proper to kill Brāhmana-s.
कुछ अन्य साँप जो धर्म के प्रति समर्पित थे, उन्होंने कहा, "यह सलाह अच्छी नहीं है। ब्राह्मणों को मारना उचित नहीं है।"

सम्यक्सद्धर्ममूला हि व्यसने शान्तिरुत्तमा अधर्मोत्तरता नाम कृत्स्नं व्यापादयेज्जगत्
Confronted with any danger, ultimate pacification is only possible when the remedy is based on dharma. As we know, adharma only destroys the entire world"
किसी भी खतरे का सामना करते समय, अंतिम शांति तभी संभव है जब उपचार धर्म पर आधारित हो। जैसा कि हम जानते हैं, अधर्म ही पूरी दुनिया को नष्ट करता है"
Other snakes said, "Let us become clouds luminescent with lightning and rain down showers so as to extinguish the sacrificial fire."
अन्य साँपों ने कहा, "आओ हम बिजली से चमकने वाले बादल बन जाएँ और बौछारें बरसाएँ ताकि यज्ञ की अग्नि बुझ जाए।"

स्रुग्भाण्डं निशि गत्वा वा अपरे भुजगोत्तमाः प्रमत्तानां हरन्त्वाशु विघ्न एवं भविष्यति
Other superior snakes said, "Let us go in the night, unobserved by anyone, and steal the ladles for the sacrifice. That will bring an obstruction.
अन्य श्रेष्ठ साँपों ने कहा, "आओ हम रात में बिना किसी से देखे चलें, और यज्ञ के लिए करछुल चुरा लें। इससे बाधा उत्पन्न होगी।
Or let the snakes go in their hundreds and thousands to the sacrifice and bite everyone and create a terror.
या साँपों को सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में यज्ञ में जाने दें और सभी को काट लें और आतंक पैदा करें।
Or let the snakes defile the pure food with their dung and urine, so that all the food is destroyed."
या साँप अपने गोबर और मूत्र से शुद्ध भोजन को अशुद्ध करें, जिससे सारा भोजन नष्ट हो जाए।”
Others said, "Let us become officiating priests at the sacrifice and obstruct it by demanding our dakṣiṇa at the beginning. Let us overpower the king, so that he does that which we ask him to."
दूसरों ने कहा, "आइए हम यज्ञ में कार्यवाहक पुजारी बनें और शुरुआत में अपनी दक्षिणा की मांग करके इसमें बाधा डालें। आइए हम राजा पर काबू पाएं, ताकि वह वही करें जो हम उससे करने के लिए कहते हैं।"
Others said, "When the king is sporting in the water, let us carry him home and tie him up, so that the sacrifice is not held."
दूसरों ने कहा, "जब राजा जल में क्रीड़ा कर रहा हो, तो हम उसे घर ले जाकर बाँध दें, कि यज्ञ न हो।"
Others, thinking themselves to be virtuous, said, " Let us go to the king and bite him at once, so that our objective is attained. Through his death, the root of all our afflictions will be severed.
दूसरों ने अपने आप को धर्मात्मा समझकर कहा, "चलो, हम राजा के पास चलें और उसे तुरंत डसें, ताकि हमारा उद्देश्य पूरा हो जाए। उसकी मृत्यु से हमारे सभी दुखों की जड़ टूट जाएगी।"
This is the final result of our wisdom and consultations. O king! If you approve of this, let us proceed immediately."
यह हमारी बुद्धिमत्ता और परामर्श का अंतिम परिणाम है। हे राजा! यदि आप इसे स्वीकार करते हैं, तो हमें तुरंत आगे बढ़ना चाहिए।"
Having said all this, they looked at Vāsuki, the lord of the snakes. After thinking for a while, Vāsuki told the snakes,
यह सब कहने के बाद, उन्होंने साँपों के स्वामी वासुकी की ओर देखा। कुछ देर सोचने के बाद वासुकी ने नागों से कहा,

नैषा वो नैष्ठिकी बुद्धिर्मता कर्तुं भुजंगमाः सर्वेषामेव मे बुद्धिः पन्नगानां न रोचते
"O snakes! This final advice of yours is not fit to be carried out. Not a single one of the plans given by the snakes seems right to me.
"हे साँपों! तुम्हारी यह अंतिम सलाह क्रियान्वित होने योग्य नहीं है। साँपों द्वारा बताई गई योजनाओं में से एक भी मुझे उचित नहीं लगती।
What can I suggest that will be for our welfare? That is the reason I am worried. The credit and the blame for the act will rest on me alone.
मैं क्या सुझाव दे सकता हूं जो हमारे कल्याण के लिए होगा? यही कारण है कि मैं चिंतित हूं.' इस कृत्य का श्रेय और दोष मुझ पर ही रहेगा।
